I was able to snap one shot (no flash) before being pushed out the door by the elder of the assembly. |

Dear Elder Meyer: Being the only Sacred Name assembly in the area, we were excited to hear that you were planning a regional Bible conference, so three of us decided on attending: me, the Overseer, and a proselyte from Miami. You wrote to me, “Be sure to attend! We look forward to meeting you.” I telephoned the Bethel office a day or two before the event, and I asked if there were any requirements for attending the meeting, what we should carry with us, and that I was bringing a new person. The man I spoke with was particularly gruff, saying he didn’t know anything much about it, except “you should go if you want to hear the truth.” So on the Sabbath, we took the three-hour drive from Vero Beach to Tampa, got to the hotel in plenty of time, and attempted to enter the meeting. We were stopped on our way in by the greeter, who insisted that our new believer would not be able to enter without pinning a doily to her hair. This she refused to do, and rightly so. Neither did the letter I received nor the home office forewarn me of importance of your custom, though I sought to find out about it before coming. So to make the trip work, we men offered the greeter a compromise – that all three of our party would wear a head covering. At this, the greeter told me he had to get the lady supervisor, who made it quite clear that men must not wear a head covering in the room, though a pinned doily would be sufficient for our friend, and “look how easily I can pin this in my hair,” the supervisor said. Your group in Tampa interprets Paul’s requirement of head covering as fulfilled by wearing a doily or drink coaster; yet we do not interpret the sparse passage in question to be binding simply to meet people or listen to a proposal. So we were given the choice of leaving our protégé out in the hall for several hours, or be turned away. We really only could choose the latter option, so we did (to the relief of the supervisor). Friends, we had driven over seven hours and eaten out on the Sabbath, doing, we supposed, Levitical work. Yet we received little more out of the Bible Conference than learning that your superstition weighs far heavier than your message. Suppose we had brought our entire assembly to the Bible Conference? Obviously, you would turn us ALL away for lack of a doily. But had that not been the case, we could have accomplished great exploits in YAHAD and on behalf of the Kingdom of Yahweh.
Sincerely, Jackson
