Lectionary Series 2753: The
Synoptic Problem, Alternate Readings, an Comparable Apocryphal
Passages
THE DOVE,
THE EVOLUTION OF A
TESTIMONIAL
The
Lectionary reading (www.lectionarypage.net)
for today includes Mark 3:13, the baptismal washing of Yahshua the
Anointed One, which includes the appearance of a dove. There are at
least four other attestations to the dove.* We may resolve at least
a little tear of the "Synoptic Problem" by following the dove
through these citations. We may make educated guesses of which were
earliest, which are the most convincing, which the most 'spiritual.'
In doing so, we may also find a unity in the passages that
overwhelms the diversity.
We are
also fortunate to find a attestation by an early scribe; that is, an
alternate reading, that has the power to lead us to some powerful
conclusions about very early prophetic themes.
The Scriptures below are all taken from the ANTalef (The
Anderson New Testament from the Sinaitic Manuscript)
for the sake of consistency. Forbidden words
like Jesus, God, etc. are to be considered technical terms
for the sake of this and
ongoing projects in Lectionary.
Mark 1:4 It was John who baptized in the wilderness and
preached the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. 5 And
there went out to him all the country of Judea and all they of
Jerusalem and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing
their sins. 6 And John was clothed with camel's hair and a girdle of
leather around his loins, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And
he preached, saying: After me comes he that is mightier than I, the
strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. 8 I
have baptized you in water, but he shall baptize you in the Holy
Spirit. 9 And it came to pass in those days that Jesus came from
Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.
10 And immediately going up out of the water he saw the heavens
rent, and the Spirit like a dove coming down upon him. 11 And there
was a voice from the heavens: Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am
well pleased. 12 And immediately the Spirit drives him into the
wilderness.

Matthew 3:13 Then came Jesus from
Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 But he
forbade him, saying: I have need to be baptized by thee, and comest
thou to me? 15 But Jesus answered and said to him: Permit it now;
for thus it becomes us to fulfill every righteous act. Then he
permitted him.
16 And having been baptized, Jesus immediately went up from the
water; and lo, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove and coming upon him. 17 And lo, a voice from
the heavens, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well
pleased.

Luke 3:21 But it came to pass that while all the people were
baptized, Jesus also having been baptized, and praying, the heaven
was opened,
22 and the Holy Spirit came down, in a bodily form like a dove,
upon him, and a voice came from heaven: Thou art my beloved son, in
thee I am well pleased, 23 And Jesus himself was, when he began his
ministry, about thirty years old.
(alternate version: and a voice came from heaven: "Thou
art my son, the beloved; this day I have begotten thee.")
Why do you suppose this reading from the prophetic Psalms was either
added or discarded?

John 1:29 On the next day he sees Jesus coming to him, and
says: Behold, the Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world.
30 This is he of whom I said: After me comes a man who has been
advanced before me, because he was before me. 31 And I knew him not,
but that he might be manifested to Israel, therefore have I come
baptizing in water.
32 And John testified, saying: I saw the Spirit descending, like
a dove, from heaven, and it abode upon him. 33 And I knew him not,
but he that sent me to baptize in water, he said to me: On whom thou
shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, this is he that
baptizeth in the Holy Spirit.

Odes of Shalome 24:23 The dove fluttered over the head of our
Sovereign Messiah, because He was Her head. 24 She sang over Him,
and Her voice was heard. The residents thereabouts were afraid, even
strangers were disturbed.
The bird began to fly, and every creeping
thing died in its lair. 25 The chasms were opened and closed; they
were all seeking MarYah as if they were about to give birth. Yet He
was not given to them to sustain them, because He did not belong to
them.
_____
The Gospel of the Nazarenes as
attested by Justin: The Lord's mother and brothers said to
him, "John baptizes for the forgiveness of sins. Let's go and be
baptized by John!" The Lord said to them, "In what way have I sinned
that I should go and be baptized by him? Unless, of course, I have
just committed the sin of ignorance!"
When the Lord had come out of
baptism's waters, the entire of the Holy Spirit descended on him and
remained. The Spirit said, "My Son, through all the prophets I have
been waiting for you so that I might rest in you. For you are my
rest; you are my first-begotten Son that will reign forever."

Psalms 2:7 I will tell of the decree:
Yahweh said unto me, Thou art my son; This day have I begotten thee.
8. Ask of me, and I will give thee the nations for thine
inheritance, And the uttermost parts of the earth for thy
possession. 9. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; Thou shalt
dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

Questions: What are the
differences between baptismal accounts? Why would there be
differences? Does there appear to be an evolution of ideas or
testimonials? Which are simpler models? Which more
complex? Can the texts be put in order from simple to complex?
What is the account from the Odes so much different? And why
do you suppose the Synoptics misquote the prophetic Psalm 2?
AND what of the stories from the Gospel of the Nazarenes, which
accounts for this time much differently?
What is Baptism? See "Baptism and the Book of Judith,"
www.jacksonsnyder.com/Arc/2011/baptism-judith.htm,
which explains that meaning and mode of baptizw.
