On the Trinity in the Nicene CreedThe Nicene Creed is the most widely accepted and used brief statements of the Christian Faith. In liturgical churches, it is said every Sunday as part of the Liturgy. It is Common Ground to East Orthodox, Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans, Calvinists, and many other Christian groups. Many groups that do not have a tradition of using it in their services nevertheless are committed to the doctrines it teaches. Someone may ask, "What about the Apostles' Creed?" Traditionally, in the West, the Apostles' Creed is used at Baptisms, and the Nicene Creed at the Eucharist (AKA the Mass, the Liturgy, the Lord's Supper, or the Holy Communion). The East uses only the Nicene Creed. When the Nicene Creed was drawn up, the chief enemy was Arianism, which denied that Jesus was fully God. Arius was a presbyter (elder) in Alexandria in Egypt, in the early 300's. (ed. note: Arius was a Bishop and a contemporary of Emperor Constantine and Eusebius Pamphilus, Constantine's theologian.) Arius taught that the Father, in the beginning, created (or begot) the Son, and that the Son, in conjunction with the Father, then proceeded to create the world. The result of this was to make the Son a created being, and hence not God in any meaningful sense. Alexander, Bishop of Alexandria, sent for Arius and questioned him. Arius stuck to his position, and was finally excommunicated by a council of Egyptian bishops. He went to Nicomedia in Asia, where he wrote letters defending his position to various bishops. Finally, the Emperor Constantine summoned a council of Bishops in Nicea (across the straits from modern Istanbul), and there in 325 the Bishops of the Church, by a decided majority, repudiated Arius and produced the first draft of what is now called the Nicene Creed. (ed. note: the votes of the Bishops were cast in the presence of the emperor, who was a chief contributor to the Nicene Creed. This may well have something to do with the outcome of the vote and the exile of the Arian bishops.) A chief spokesman for the full deity of Christ was Athanasius, deacon of Alexandria, assistant (and later successor) to the aging Alexander. (Ed. note: Athanasius did not feel the Nicene went far enough and wrote his own creed, which is still published in church books of worship. The Athanasian Creed give absolutely no room for monotheism, oneness, Shema, or unitarianism; rather, it promotes what seems to me as pure polytheism. The Athanasian Creed is published below.) The Arian position has been revived in our own day by the Watchtower Society (the JW's), who explicitly hail Arius as a great witness to the truth. The Text of the Athanasian Creed |

The Athanasian Creed, also known as Quicunque Vult or Fides Catholica, is named after Athanasius, a bishop of Alexandria. Athanasius was famous for defending orthodoxy against Arianism. The Athanasian Creed was probably not composed until several decades after Athanasius’ death in AD 373 and has never been recognized by an ecumenical council as an official creed of the Church. Nevertheless, it is a good orthodox summation of the doctrine of the Trinity and has been widely used in worship, especially in the west. The Athanasian Creed is declining in popularity. Today, Lutherans still use the Athanasian Creed in the liturgy for Trinity Sunday. The western version of the Athanasian Creed contains a filioque clause similar to the filioque clause in the western version of the Nicene Creed. Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic faith. Which faith except everyone do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt he shall perish everlastingly. And the catholic faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity, neither confounding the persons, nor dividing the substance. For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Spirit. But the godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, is all one, the glory equal, the majesty co-eternal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit. The Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, and the Holy Spirit uncreated. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Spirit incomprehensible. The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Spirit eternal. And yet they are not three eternals, but one Eternal. As also there are not three incomprehensibles, nor three uncreated, but one Uncreated, and one Incomprehensible. So likewise the Father is Almighty, the Son Almighty, and the Holy Spirit Almighty. And yet they are not three almighties, but one Almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. And yet they are not three gods, but one God.
