NOTE ON THE TEXT: (1) Matthew 9:35 - 10:8. I translated the text myself from the Nestle Greek in order to (a) restore the "historical present" tense and its sense of immediacy, and (b) to discard ecclesiastical baggage and hackneyed word definition.

TEXT: Matthew 9:35-10:8, my own translation based on the Nestle Greek text.

(9:35) And Jesus toured all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the good message of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every weakness. (36) And when he saw the crowds, he was broken-hearted about them, because they were constantly troubled and down-cast like sheep having no shepherd.

(37) He then tells his students, "Great indeed is the harvest, but few are the workers. (38) So pray of the harvest-master that he might cast workers out into his harvest." (10:1) And summoning his twelve students to him, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, so as to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every weakness.

(2) These are the names of the twelve emissaries - first, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew, and Jacob of Zebedee and his brother John, (3) Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax agent, Jacob of Alphaeus and Thaddeus, (4) Simon the Zealot and Judas the Sacarii, who also is the one betraying him.

(5) Jesus sent those twelve out, instructing them saying, "Don't go by way of foreign countries, and don't enter a city of Samaritans, (6) but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. (7) And while going, preach, saying, 'The Heavenly Kingdom has drawn close.' (8) Heal the sick, rouse the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons; you have freely received, freely give."
