Subject: FW: Mother's Day
You might be wondering, why is the rabbi writing about Mother's Day?
It's not a Jewish holiday.
We can take a secular holiday like Mother's Day and bring a Jewish
flavor to it. Here are a few questions you might want to discuss over
your Mother's Day brunch on Sunday which can do more to make it a Jewish
experience than having bagels with your eggs:
1. Why ISN'T Mother's Day in the Torah?
2. Why is the commandment "Honor your parents" and not "Love your
parents?"
3. Why is it "Love the Lord your God" and not "Honor the Lord your God?"
4. Why is it "Love your neighbor as yourself" and not "honor your
neighbor as yourself?"
5. Why is there a separate commandment which says to fear your parents?
6. Can love be commanded? Fear?
7. What does the commandment "to be fruitful and multiply" mean? Not
just literally, but how would you understand it metaphorically? Does
adopting a child fulfill this commandment?
Happy Mother's Day!
Rabbi Leff
...Thanks to Rabbi Jacob Chinitz, who suggested most of these questions.
