PREVIEW Awake
My Heart J. Sidlow Baxter - daily devotional
TEXT: Mat 11:28 (NRSV) {27} "All
things have been delivered to me by my Father.... {28} Come to me, all you that
are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest."
INTRO: My need for a Father
Jesus was a man with no earthly father
He was a scandal, known as "Mary's
son."
Religious leaders taunt: "We know
who our father is."
Yet Jesus knew his Father: "Our
Father in Heaven."
And he was the perfect son, "This
is my beloved son."
PREMISE:
Thus All things given to Jesus by Father: Ability, Ownership, Compassion
Ability
A bystander "Who can do such
works unless he be from God?"
Jesus promised "I will give you another counselor"
(advocate)
Paul: "I can do all things
through Christ."
Ownership
Jesus doubly owns us - he created us
and he bought us
The boy who bought back his toy boat
he had build from sticks -
"Now I owns ya
double - I made ya, and I bought ya."
We are his: "I am my beloved's
and he is mine; his banner"
Compassion
Why did Jesus do good works - his
compassion always linked
He was given to the world for the sake
of love "For God..."
He died for the sake of love -
"Jesus loves me"
PROMISE: Through his ability, by write of
ownership, by virtue of love Jesus PROMISES rest for who? - All who are
tired from carrying heavy burdens - I will give you rest. It is a free
gift of God.
It tells you
about who the followers of Jesus are - those in need.
And the
promise is for a beleaguered and strung-out people
Not by ___
will you get rest, (financial viability, right living, a good doctor, finding
the right love-mate, prescription drugs, liquor, church-going, working long
hours) But Jesus says, I WILL! I WILL GIVE YOU REST! And Jesus Christ is the same yesterday,
today, and forever – so "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus"
PRINCIPLE:
Come to me and enter my rest!
Heb 4:9-11 So then, a sabbath rest still remains for the people of God;
{10} for those who enter God's rest also cease from their labors as God did
from his. {11} Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest, so that
no one may fall through such disobedience as theirs.
Take my yoke
and learn from me - what does it mean to be yoked?
The ox who joyfully came for the yoke when
its partner was yoked.
Jesus "yoke" is a joyful yoke,
the symbol of partnership in all
A
symbol of labor and a symbol of rest
The key to entering his rest is found in
Prov 3:{5} Trust in the LORD with all your
heart, and do not rely on your own insight. {6} In all your ways acknowledge
him, and he will make straight your paths. All your heart, and do not rely on
yourself! All your ways, acknowledge
him!
"What
will Jesus do thru me?"
CONCLUSION: There is a big daddy for you - one who will
fight your battles, worry for your cares, free you from stress. The powerful Father calls to you today:
"Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I
will give you rest." Friends,
let's stand on this promise of Jesus, and be at rest at last.
